Coffee/Caffe Late in the XIX Century, drinking coffee in public cafes became a popular pastime thanks to Venetian merchants following the spice trade, who introduced it to Italy. Not enough to simply enjoy rich espresso, the distinguished members of the House of Savoy in Piemonte added chocolate powder and cream; they developed a method to froth the milk to create steamy cappuccino (never drink it after ten am, say the Italians!) Espresso is traditionally served in Italy following a large meal—the Italians say it helps digest the food—or, as a late afternoon “pick me up”. Try it with a dash of grappa or a bicerin of Fernet Branca! Sam has both domestic imports and Italian espresso; other coffees are available ground for convenience or “whole bean” for the purist.
